Another winner for you. :)

The last few days I’ve been sick, and I’ve slacked on my calorie posts.  Rest assured, since I know everyone is on the edge of their seat, that I’m sticking to 2000 calories or less.  This morning I was 202.4 pounds – I do need a couple of very low calorie days to get things moving again, but unfortunately I now have a problem. :)

Ever since I was a kid, I have disliked cheese, to the point where I wouldn’t eat it at all.  Lately, I’ve been introduced to some different cheeses via my wife, and my palate has come to at least tolerate raw cheese, but I still don’t eat it on a regular basis.

Last Wednesday, my son’s class took a field trip to Elodie Farms up near Bahama.  The kids had a great time, as they had a bunch of field games set up (volleyball, badminton) and you could also pet the goats while waiting to go through the tour of the facility.  While we were there, Dave (the owner) gave out some samples of his Chevre, a soft, moist, crumbly cheese.

This cheese is utterly delicious.  This is nothing like what you buy in blocks in Kroger, which I suspect was the original source of my dislike for cheese.  I also got to taste their fresh feta cheese, which was equally good.  I’m now completely convinced that one, grocery-store cheese is crap, and two, I have been missing out on some amazing food.  Grumble.  So Yesterday, I went to the Durham Farmer’s Market and bought two logs of the Chevre and a half-pound of feta (unfortunately from another vendor, as Dave was sold out).  Hopefully I can make it last for the whole week and thoroughly enjoy it without messing up my diet.

Quick! Count those birds!

This is the kind of Turing test that I’m doing for my data entry.  The total is really the only thing that saves it, and that’s not always reliable.  They should use these things as captchas.

EDIT: Here’s another nice one.

Yesterday (Monday, October 6th) I worked the Libertarian Party booth at the Dixie Classic Fair in Winston-Salem.  I had a good time, talked a lot with the LPNC chair, Barbara Howe, and met a lot of interesting people.

Overall the receptivity was good – we didn’t have anyone who yelled at us for messing up the election.  Receptivity towards Mike Munger, our candidate for governor, was very good.  There were a number of people who did not want to vote for either McCrory or Perdue.  I also talked to several people who had never heard of the Libertarian Party, and that was a good feeling.  The highlight of my day was talking to a young college student who said something to the effect of “At school, it’s all just Republicans or Democrats.  I didn’t even know there was another choice!”  Outstanding. :)

There were other things that were … not so good.  If there is anywhere the epidemic of obesity in the United States is painfully evident, it is in rural North Carolina.  I would estimate that fully 80% of the people in attendance were overweight by thirty pounds or more (including myself, I might add).  At least a third were more than 100 pounds overweight.  There were a number of people who were riding on electric carts because they simply were not able to walk themselves.  I’m not talking about one or two, I’m talking about fifty or sixty.  The crisis of healthcare that this will represent in twenty years is going to be … unimaginable.  And it’ll be the poorest counties in North Carolina that bear the brunt of it.
